January 29, 2013

By: Jamie Gros

Dr. Laynie Barrilleaux - Nicholls State UniversityOn January 29th, 2013 Dr. Laynie Barrilleaux with Nicholls State University spoke to Rotary on the new updates of the university.  Dr. Barrilleaux has served as an active member of Thibodaux Rotary as well as its president.  She joined Nicholls as an instructor of management in 1981 and moved through the academic ranks to full professor in 1998.

During her tenure, she served as head of the department of management and marketing, liaison for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and assistant vice president for academic affairs. She has led Nicholls through successful reaffirmations of the university-wide regional accreditation and the NCAA recertification. Barrilleaux has been instrumental in securing various grants for the university and has publications in numerous journals.

Barrilleaux announce several updates on the university.  The new master’s program in Nursing is starting off very successful and the university has also launched a brand new user friendly website.  However, her main goal of the hour was to talk about Nicholls State University Online.  Online learning gives the student the ability to attend school and/or study virtually any place, anywhere, and at any time.

This program is geared towards a more specific student.  This is a student who has strong computer skills, time management skills. Can learn independently, but ultimately has conflicts with being on campus for classes and presentations.  Nicholls Online is a degree that is offered through Nicholls State in a complete online format.

It is currently offering 7 degrees online in an 8 week condensed class session rather than the 16 week semesters.  The program is allows students to complete classes more quickly, focus on fewer classes and graduate sooner. However, with Nicholls Online the student is still paying for accredited programs, certified faculty and education with a personal touch. The student also has the ability the extend class up to six months in the event of time restraints.  Courses begin every January, March, June, August and October.

With Nicholls online the student has no additional university fees.  All undergrad courses are $250 per credit hour and all graduate courses are $350 per credit hour.

Nicholls Online currently offers these degrees:

  • Bachelors of Arts in History
  • Bachelors of Arts in English
  • Bachelors of Arts in Sociology
  • Bachelors of Science in General Studies
  • Bachelors of Science in general Family and Consumer Science
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing ( for students who have encumbered RN licenses)
  • Bachelor of Science in Business Administration
  • Masters of Education in Educational Leadership

Flip Out Over Uganda’s Hope Refuge Orphanage School | BCA’s Early Act Club

October 5, 2012

The Early Act Club is pleased to announce our first service project of the year. Our project is titled, “Flip Out Over Uganda’s Hope Refuge Orphanage School!” This is an international project that our club will take part in for the purpose of providing flip flops to the Hope Refuge Orphanage School in Uganda.

If you choose to participate, you may donate any new flip flops from now until October 31. Although we ask the flip flops to be new, you may prefer to purchase less expensive pairs, which we recommend. Stores such as Wal-Mart, Fred’s, and Family Dollar usually have inexpensive flip flops. Mrs. Sandy Holloway, our director, will travel to Uganda in January and bring all the collected flip flops to the orphanage.

We would like to inform you of the tentative service projects that we have  planned for this year. The projects are as follows:

September/October – Flip Flop Collection for Uganda Orphanage
November/December – Thibodaux Toy Drive Collection
January – Collection of Items for Children’s Hospital
February – Valentine Cards for Heart Patients at TRMC
March – Mardi Gras Bead Drive for Granier Industries
April/May – Hope for Animals Collection

As always, thank you for your support. With your help, we can truly live up to our motto, “Come to Learn. Learn to Serve.”

Thank you,
Mrs. Tabor, Ms. Prejean, Mrs. Bryan

Thibodaux Rotary Club | Education: Roast & Toast | Diane T. Martin and Linda V. Thomas

August 21, 2012

By: Amy Connor-Flores

Thibodaux Rotary Club - Diane Martin and Linda ThomasTuesday’s speakers were Diane T. Martin and Linda V. Thomas, co-authors of the book Education: Roast & Toast:  Anecdotes of 60+ years of Teaching.   Martin and Thomas shared with us a light-hearted glimpse into their process of pulling together laughable stories and experiences from their years of teaching and ultimately publishing a book.

Martin attended LSU and received her B.A. from Nicholls State University.  She studied rhetoric at Purdue University in Lafayette, in and completed a writing seminar in Copper Mountain, CO for Colorado State University.  She is certified in English, composition, speech, and ESL.  She has taught fourth graders through college freshmen in Louisiana and speech therapy for Onslow School District in North Carolina.  She calls Morgan City and Napoleonville, LA home.

Linda V. Thomas received a B.A. from Nicholls State University and is certified to teach English, French, and ESL.  She has studied French at UL Lafayette, Université Catholique de L’Ouest in Angers, France, and Université du Québec à Trois-Riviéres in Québec, Canada.  She has also taught elementary, high school, and adult French classes. She lives with her husband, Deeda, in Berwick, LA.

For many years Martin and Thomas taught across the hall from each other,  meeting at lunch and after school to “cuss” and discuss the backward evolution of education.  Long before their retirement they set out to “write the book” on the hilarity that is seen in the world of education.

Over the course of 2 ½ years the two worked diligently (and sometimes not-so-diligently) to compile a book full of anecdotes highlighting the eccentricities, vulnerabilities, and imperfections of educators and students seen over their shared 60-plus years of experience.  The book is a tongue-in-cheek exploration of the comical adventures, unpredictable mishaps, and baffling challenges that teachers encounter on a daily basis. Thibodaux Rotary Club - Diane Martin & Linda V. Thomas2

It reinforces the notion that simple communication really can be stifled by misinterpretation.  Education: Roast & Toast:  Anecdotes of 60+ years of Teaching can be purchased from local booksellers as well as on Amazon.com.

The Amazing Future Of E.D. White Education

EDW studentsDavid C. Boudreaux and Michelle Chiasson, E. D. White principal, with three 9th grade students: Cody LeBouef, Andre Broussard, and John Hue; discussed the iPad program for the 2012-2013 school year.

In the 21st century, understanding and using technology will be an integral part of virtually every aspect of daily life. It is our school’s responsibility to prepare students for this future. Our holistic approach to education is based on the belief that a young person learns from his or her whole experience.

The classroom is the primary place where this preparation will occur; therefore, every classroom must be equipped with diverse technologies to support teaching and learning. Every teacher must be knowledgeable and skilled in the use of these technologies in daily instruction. When integrated into instruction, technology will support new strategies for teaching and learning by addressing diverse learning styles, accommodating individual learning rates, helping students accept responsibility for their learning, providing the means to communicate globally, and improving academic achievement. .

Why iPad?

In addition to the amazing educational apps that may be downloaded on the iPad, it has the ability to perform the following functions:

▪ Create, read, edit, and produce a full set of Microsoft Office compatible documents

▪ Create dramatic video presentations

▪ Perform wide-ranging internet-based research

▪ Utilize subject-specific apps to engage the students in the learning process

▪ Take class notes including PDF annotation

▪ Save and retrieve files through Cloud-based storage such as DropBox

▪ Create simple and complex graphic organizer

▪ Read e-books and textbooks

After years of research, four parent informational meetings, a parent survey, and discussion by the E. D. White Advisory Council, our school will implement an iPad program for the 2012-2013 school year. The iPad has the potential to greatly enhance the way teachers teach and the way students learn.

Students can take part in the school’s lease purchase plan through Apple or bring an iPad 2 from home.  They are to be Wi-Fi only without 3G capability.  All iPads will connect to the school’s network and internet filtering software.
